CSK Coach Eric Simons Discusses MS Dhoni's Future and Team Insights After IPL 2026 Exit
MS Dhoni's Performance and Future in IPL
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on May 22, Chennai Super Kings' bowling coach Eric Simons shared insights regarding MS Dhoni's absence from the IPL 2026 season due to a calf injury. Despite not participating, Simons noted that the 44-year-old has been performing impressively in the nets, stating, "He’s hitting the ball as well as I’ve ever seen him hit it."
Chennai Super Kings concluded their IPL 2026 campaign with a significant defeat against the Gujarat Titans, losing by 89 runs in their final group-stage match.
Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL championships, has been sidelined for the entire season due to his injury. When asked about the possibility of seeing Dhoni back in action next season, Simons expressed optimism, highlighting that Dhoni's batting remains strong despite his limitations in running. He emphasized that the decision regarding Dhoni's future in the IPL rests solely with him, as he will prioritize the team's needs over personal considerations.
Simons remarked, "He has hit the ball so well. He obviously had a leg injury which made it very difficult for him to run. So, that’s why he couldn’t play. But in terms of hitting the ball in the nets, he’s hitting it as well as I’ve ever seen him hit it. Only MS will know when he’s ready to return, and if he feels he’s not fit, he won’t play. However, if he is fit, he will make the decision that benefits the team. It would be fantastic to have him back with us."
Since their last title win in 2023, CSK has struggled, failing to reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, having been eliminated in the group stages each time.
Despite the disappointing exit from IPL 2026, Simons noted that the team gained crucial insights into their balance and player combinations throughout the season. He believes that this understanding will aid the franchise in making more informed strategic decisions in the future.
Simons stated, "A lot of positives come from our growing understanding of ourselves as a unit. Achieving the right balance is essential for winning in the IPL. We now know our strengths and weaknesses better, which will help us adapt to different conditions moving forward."
He also praised young talents like Kartik Tyagi, who scored 295 runs in 11 innings, and Urvil Patel, who made 129 runs in seven innings, including a remarkable 13-ball fifty. Simons emphasized that the team has a clearer grasp of their squad's capabilities as they look ahead.
"Kartik has developed impressively this season, and we have a solid understanding of what he brings to the table. Urvil has also shown his potential. We leave this tournament with a better understanding of our unit, which will serve us well in the future," concluded Simons.
