CSK's Struggles Against LSG

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India] - In a recent IPL 2026 match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a disappointing seven-wicket loss to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), prompting captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to commend the LSG batters while acknowledging his bowlers' shortcomings in execution.

Mitchell Marsh delivered a stunning performance, scoring 90 runs off just 38 balls, leading LSG to victory. Alongside him, Josh Inglis contributed 36 runs, and Nicholas Pooran remained unbeaten at 32, helping LSG chase down CSK's total of 188 in a mere 16.4 overs. The opening partnership of 135 runs between Marsh and Inglis was pivotal in securing the win early on. For CSK, Mukesh Choudhary and Spencer Johnson were the only bowlers to claim wickets, finishing with figures of 1/24 and 1/39, respectively.

Following the match, Gaikwad noted that the pitch provided some assistance to fast bowlers, making it challenging to score off a hard length. He expressed that while a target of over 180 runs was commendable, LSG's batters executed their shots exceptionally well during the chase. He explained that CSK's strategy to bowl hard lengths was based on the strengths of the opposition but admitted that they failed to implement it effectively.

“The pitch had something for the fast bowlers, making it tough to score off a hard length. We aimed for 160-170 runs and ended up with 180, which was a decent effort. LSG batted brilliantly and played some remarkable shots. We intended to bowl short balls, but Inglis and Marsh adapted well, and we missed our execution,” Gaikwad stated during the post-match presentation.

Earlier, CSK managed to post 187/5 after a rocky start, with Kartik Sharma's impressive 71 and late contributions from Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer helping stabilize the innings. Akash Singh was the standout bowler for LSG, taking 3 wickets for 26 runs, while the rest of the bowling unit effectively restricted CSK before LSG's explosive chase sealed the match.

Gaikwad acknowledged LSG's superior performance on the day and emphasized that CSK must accept the outcome. He praised Kartik's innings and expressed optimism about the batting unit's improvement as they approach the final two matches. However, he conceded that the bowling unit had an off day. Regarding CSK's playoff aspirations, he stated that the team is not overly concerned and should focus on playing well to turn their fortunes around.

With 12 points from 12 matches, CSK must win their remaining two games to secure a playoff spot.

“Sometimes the opposition simply plays better cricket, and you have to accept that. Kartik's 70-odd runs were impressive, and I’m confident that our batting is starting to come together as we head into the last couple of games. The bowling was off today. As for our playoff chances, it’s straightforward; we just need to ensure we have a good day and hope to turn things around,” Gaikwad concluded.
