In a remarkable feat, Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, has set a new record by becoming the oldest player to score in a knockout match of the FIFA World Cup. This milestone was achieved during Portugal's 2-1 triumph over Croatia in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

At 41 years and 147 days old, Ronaldo surpassed the previous record for the oldest goalscorer in a World Cup knockout game. This match also marked his first-ever goal in knockout rounds, as he participated in his sixth FIFA World Cup.

Ronaldo netted the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 67th minute after a VAR review confirmed a foul, leveling the score after Ivan Perisic had initially put Croatia ahead.
