Cooper Connolly Shines in IPL Debut, Mirroring Shaun Marsh's Legacy
Historic IPL Debut for Cooper Connolly
In a remarkable debut, Cooper Connolly made headlines by leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a thrilling three-wicket win against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their first match of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The Australian cricketer scored an impressive 72 runs off just 44 balls, remaining not out as the team successfully chased down a target of 163 with five balls remaining. Connolly, who stepped in at number three after the early dismissal of Priyansh Arya, showcased his talent with five fours and five sixes against Shubman Gill's squad.
Connolly's Record-Breaking Performance
Connolly's innings marked the second-highest score by a PBKS player on debut, following Shaun Marsh's unbeaten 84 runs in 2008. Marsh's record for the most runs by a player on debut while chasing in IPL history still stands, but Connolly's performance places him second on that list.

The Connolly-Marsh Connection
Connolly, who hails from Western Australia, revealed that Shaun Marsh was his childhood idol, and he even mimicked Marsh's batting stance. Interestingly, he wears the same jersey number (9) as Marsh for the Australian team. Before adopting the number, Connolly sought Marsh's approval, to which Marsh graciously agreed, stating it would be an honor for him.
Connolly was acquired by the PBKS for ₹3 crores during the 2026 IPL mega auction in Abu Dhabi. Marsh, who played exclusively for PBKS from 2008 to 2017, holds a special place in the franchise's history, having scored 2477 runs in 71 matches and winning the orange cap in the inaugural IPL season.
