Cooper Connolly Shines Despite Punjab Kings' Setback in IPL 2026
Sanjay Bangar Commends Cooper Connolly's Performance
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 8: Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar has lauded the young Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly for his impressive consistency and understanding of his batting capabilities during the current Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Punjab Kings (PBKS).
During a discussion on Star Sports, expert Bangar emphasized Connolly's swift adaptation to the demands of T20 cricket, noting his maturity and immediate impact on the game.
"He made a significant impression for Punjab Kings right from his debut match against GT, contributing effectively. Although some failures are part of T20 cricket, his overall performance has been commendable," Bangar remarked.
He also highlighted Connolly's knack for recognizing and focusing on his scoring zones, especially his inclination towards offside shots.
"He has a clear understanding of his scoring areas, favors offside play, and relies on his strengths. It's always encouraging to witness a young batter honing his all-round skills," he added.
In a recent match, however, the Punjab franchise faced their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2026, unable to chase down a daunting target of 236 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad, despite Connolly's remarkable unbeaten century. In just his 10th IPL appearance, Connolly scored his first T20 century at Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for his team.
The 22-year-old became the youngest overseas player to achieve an IPL century, scoring 107 not out off 59 deliveries, which included seven fours and eight sixes. He has accumulated 377 runs for PBKS, making him the franchise's leading run-scorer this season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad set a formidable total of 235/4, bolstered by fifties from Heinrich Klaasen (69*) and Ishan Kishan (55), along with quick contributions from Head and Abhishek. For PBKS, Chahal was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 1/32 in 4 overs.
On the bowling front for SRH, Pat Cummins effectively managed his bowlers to prevent PBKS from gaining any momentum. Cummins (2/34), Shivang Kumar (2/45), Sakib Hussain (1/40), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1/11 in 2 overs) were the wicket-takers for the home side.
