Controversy Erupts Over IPL 2026 Final Venue Decision
BCCI's Venue Decision Sparks Discontent
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has stirred controversy by awarding the hosting rights for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) final to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This decision has drawn criticism from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), particularly as Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium was overlooked. Traditionally, the final is held at the home ground of the defending champions, which in this case is the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who claimed the title in 2025. The KSCA expressed that its president, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad, had been in direct communication with the BCCI, emphasizing the readiness of the Bengaluru venue to host the final.
In a statement, the KSCA voiced its disappointment regarding the allocation of IPL Playoff matches to other locations. Prasad had reportedly conveyed the association's eagerness and preparedness to host the playoffs at the renowned M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The KSCA highlighted that the IPL matches held in Bengaluru this season received positive feedback for their organization, crowd management, and overall spectator experience, showcasing their capability to host significant events.
Despite their readiness, the KSCA acknowledged the BCCI's decision to assign the matches elsewhere, although the specific reasons for this choice were not formally communicated. They expressed respect for the BCCI's authority in making such decisions.
BCCI Explains Venue Change
In response to the backlash, the BCCI released a statement explaining the rationale behind not hosting the final in Bengaluru. They cited operational and logistical issues stemming from local authority requirements that exceeded the BCCI's established protocols. The IPL governing council stated, "Due to certain operational and logistical considerations, the TATA IPL 2026 Playoffs will be held across three venues this season as a special case. Bengaluru was initially set to host the Final, but due to local association demands that fell outside BCCI's guidelines, the venue has been reassigned." This statement alluded to a recent controversy involving ticket demands from Karnataka MLAs, which the KSCA resolved by providing three tickets to each MLA.
Playoff Venues Announced
Looking ahead, the first qualifier is scheduled for May 26 at the HPCA International Cricket Stadium in Dharamshala. The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh will host the eliminator and second qualifier on May 27 and 29, respectively. This venue has retained the right to host two playoff matches, as the Punjab Kings (PBKS) were the runners-up last year. The final in Ahmedabad is set for May 31, marking the fourth time this venue will host the IPL final, following 2022, 2023, and 2025.
