Chennaiyin FC Aims for Strong Finish Against Punjab FC in ISL 2026
Chennaiyin FC Prepares for Crucial Match Against Punjab FC
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 4: As the Indian Super League 2026 season nears its end, Chennaiyin FC is set to face Punjab FC on Wednesday, seeking to gain momentum in their final matches.
With only three games remaining, the Marina Machans are determined to finish the season on a high note, as stated in a recent press release.
Given that two of their last three matches will be played away, this encounter against Punjab is seen as a vital chance to establish a positive tone for the concluding phase of the season.
Recent encounters between the two teams have been closely contested. Chennaiyin secured a 2-1 victory in their last match, and over the past five meetings, they have won two and drawn one, highlighting the competitive spirit of this rivalry.
In anticipation of the match, head coach Clifford Rayes Miranda stressed the importance of solid defense against a formidable opponent.
“Punjab is known for their attacking prowess. Their key players excel in the offensive zone, and they have several talented Indian players. We recognize the challenge ahead, especially given their direct style of play. They move the ball swiftly to create opportunities for their attackers. Therefore, we must defend collectively and effectively,” he remarked during the pre-match press conference on Monday.
Despite facing challenges this season, Chennaiyin has focused on establishing a distinct identity under Miranda's leadership. Reflecting on this journey, he stated:
“We have a clear vision of what we want to achieve, and I believe we are making progress. This season is unique, lacking the usual long pre-season to implement our strategies. Transitioning to a new approach takes time, but I can see the advancements we are making.”
Defender Klusner Pereira, who joined Miranda at the press conference, shared his thoughts on his debut and the differences between various levels of Indian football.
“I’m pleased with my debut, even though I had to leave the field due to a minor injury. I’m committed to giving my best in training, and it’s been rewarding to work with such talented teammates. The competition is fierce, which motivates me to improve and earn my place in the squad,” Klusner expressed. “At this level, the pressure is greater, but the essence of football remains unchanged. Winning requires the same mindset, regardless of the tier.”
As the season draws to a close, Chennaiyin aims to maximize their remaining matches while focusing on future development. Miranda reiterated the importance of their playing philosophy and the team's objectives for both the short and long term.
“Understanding our playing style is crucial, and that will remain consistent until the final match. While results are important, we aim to win our last three games. It won’t be easy, but we must continue to work hard, stay committed, and give our all. We need to maintain a positive attitude and approach the pitch with the right mindset, united as a team, regardless of the outcome. Ultimately, our goal is to finish as high as possible,” the head coach concluded.
Miranda also confirmed that the entire squad, except for Elsinho, will be available for selection, including the recently recovered Farukh Choudhary.
