Bangladesh to Decide on IPL Broadcast Ban After Minister's Return
Awaiting Decision on IPL Broadcast in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Bangladesh - On March 28, the Sports Minister of Bangladesh, Aminul Haque, announced that a decision regarding the potential lifting of the ban on Indian Premier League (IPL) broadcasts will be made once the Information Minister, Zahiruddin Swapan, returns from his overseas trip.
The Information Minister is currently abroad and is expected back in Bangladesh on March 30.
Haque stated, “We will consult with the Information Minister upon his return to discuss the possibility of lifting the IPL broadcast ban. We aim to gather more information on the issue before making a final decision.”
Additionally, he mentioned that the Information Ministry had reached out to the Ministry of Sports for their input on the matter.
The ban was initially imposed by the interim government of Bangladesh in response to the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders' refusal to allow Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman to participate.
On January 5, the interim government issued a directive to halt all live broadcasts of the IPL and related events in Bangladesh until further notice.
Following the general elections on February 12, the newly formed democratic government took office, and the Ministry of Information subsequently inquired with the Ministry of Sports about the possibility of lifting the broadcast ban.
As of now, the Ministry of Information has not received feedback from the Ministry of Sports, and a decision will be made once their opinion is obtained.
The IPL 2026 season is set to commence on March 28, featuring the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Kolkata Knight Riders will kick off their season against the Mumbai Indians at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
