The third day of the 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championships in New Delhi was filled with excitement and surprises. Exciting Developments at the Championships

New Delhi witnessed thrilling action on June 22 as the third day of the 26th Asian Senior Fencing Championships unfolded at Bharat Mandapam. This event serves as a crucial qualifier for the upcoming Asian Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Japan continued to shine, with Kyosuke Matsuyama securing the gold in men's foil, while Irina Bakaldina made history by winning Kazakhstan's inaugural individual women's epee title.


Promising Performances from Indian Fencers

The young Indian team showcased commendable performances on their home turf. In the Women's Epee, Prachi Lohan led the way with a 22nd-place finish, followed closely by Taniksha Khatri in 29th. Mitva Jesangbhai Chaudhari and Yashkeerat Kaur Hayer finished 35th and 43rd, respectively. On the Men's Foil side, Sachin Sachin led the Indian contingent in 25th place, while Sanasam Hemash Singh, Tejas Manoj Patil, and Aditya Aditya finished 37th, 47th, and 57th, respectively.


Upsets and Surprises in the Tournament

The day was marked by unexpected outcomes for several tournament favorites. In the Men's Foil, reigning Olympic champion Cheung Ka Long from Hong Kong faced a shocking defeat in the quarterfinals against South Korea's Im Cheolwoo, finishing in 6th place. Defending Asian champion Choi Chun Yin Ryan also exited in the quarterfinals, losing to Japan's Kyosuke Matsuyama and ending up in 5th place. In the Women's Epee, South Korea's defending champion Song Se-ra was halted in the semifinals by Kazakhstan's Irina Bakaldina, who ultimately secured the bronze.


Dramatic Finals and Medal Winners

The finals were filled with high stakes and fierce competition. In Men's Foil, Japan's Kyosuke Matsuyama triumphed over teammate Kazuki Iimura in an all-Japanese final, earning the gold medal while Iimura took silver. South Korea's Im Cheolwoo and Jeonghyun Youn shared the bronze. In the Women's Epee, Irina Bakaldina made history by defeating Hong Kong's Kaylin Sin Yan Hsieh to claim Kazakhstan's first individual women's epee gold. Hsieh received the silver, while Japan's Tamaki Terayama and South Korea's Song Se-ra shared the bronze.
