A Unique Sporting Event for a Noble Cause

The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, transformed into an unexpected venue for sports as it hosted a groundbreaking pickleball fundraiser aimed at combating child hunger. Named ‘Pickleball with a Purpose’, this nearly 12-hour event featured competitive matches right in the center of one of the busiest shopping destinations in the U.S. The funds raised were directed to Every Meal, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting child hunger by supplying Weekend Food Bags to children in need. This initiative is particularly timely for the organization, which has been under pressure due to what they refer to as Operation Metro Surge. Rob Williams, the Founder and President of Every Meal, stated, “We’ve distributed nearly 40,000 food bags since January specifically for this mission.” He added, “In addition, we serve 13,000 children weekly through our weekend meal program, providing them with bags of food to take home for the weekends.”

Williams emphasized that the choice of a public venue was deliberate. The aim was not only to raise funds but also to enhance community awareness. “We want to engage the community to ensure that children have the food they need to learn, grow, and thrive,” he explained. “I’ve noticed people stopping to observe, curious about the event. They can see information about Every Meal and realize that while pickleball is being played, it’s all for ensuring children have food over the weekends.”

In recent years, pickleball has seen a surge in popularity worldwide. Its growth as both a competitive and recreational sport has increasingly been leveraged for social causes. Fundraisers associated with pickleball have raised awareness for various health issues, including Alzheimer’s and cancer, while also assisting families facing medical and financial challenges.

The event at the Mall of America highlighted how the sport's accessibility and community spirit can be harnessed for significant social impact. By merging sports with social responsibility, both organizers and participants showcased how this burgeoning recreational trend can help tackle urgent issues like food insecurity.
