India's Young Boxers Gear Up for Asian Championships in Tashkent

The Indian boxing team, comprising 56 talented young athletes, is set to compete in the Asian Boxing U15 & U17 Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This prestigious event, starting May 1, aims to highlight the country's commitment to developing future boxing champions. Indian Boxing Team Prepares for Asian U15 & U17 Championships

New Delhi, April 30: A contingent of 56 young Indian boxers is ready to kick off their journey at the Asian Boxing U15 & U17 Championships 2026, which will take place starting May 1 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This event is set to showcase some of the brightest young talents from across Asia in various weight classes, as announced by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).


India enters this esteemed tournament with a robust and diverse team, featuring both boys and girls, highlighting the nation’s commitment to grassroots development and the cultivation of future boxing stars.


The U-17 teams consist of 13 boxers each for boys and girls, competing in weight categories from 44-46kg to over 80kg, with four coaches and a physiotherapist supporting each squad. The U-15 teams include 15 boxers in both divisions, competing in categories ranging from 30-33kg to over 70kg, accompanied by five coaches and a physiotherapist.


In anticipation of the tournament, Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, emphasized the significance of these championships for young Indian boxers, providing them with essential international exposure and the opportunity to face Asia's elite.


“These championships are a vital opportunity for our young athletes to gain international experience and challenge themselves against the best in Asia. In recent years, boxing has emerged as India’s leading sport, consistently achieving the highest medal counts in major international competitions, including the Youth Asian Games and World Championships. This ongoing success underscores the strength of our grassroots initiatives. We have a talented group of athletes across various age groups, and we believe this team represents the next generation of champions for Indian boxing,” he stated.


The championships are crucial for spotting and nurturing the next wave of elite boxers, with many participants expected to advance through the national ranks and represent India in significant international events in the future.
