A Historic Win for Indian Women’s Hockey

Kakamigahara: The Indian women's hockey team showcased an impressive performance, defeating Indonesia 17-1, marking their second consecutive win in Pool B at the Asian Games on Monday. The trio of young forwards, Deepika Sehrawat, Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, and Navneet Kaur, each netted a hat-trick.

Deepika, aged 22, scored three goals at the 8th, 28th, and 40th minutes, converting three penalty corners. Rutuja added her goals in the 15th, 20th, and 38th minutes, while Navneet found the net in the 35th, 56th, and 57th minutes.

Additionally, Sunelita Toppo (11th, 30th), Lalremsiami (12th, 16th), and Sakshi Rana (25th, 57th) each scored twice, while captain Salima Tete (35th) and Ishika Chaudhary (36th) contributed one goal each. Indonesia's only goal came from Innes Aditiya in the 32nd minute.

India's next match is against Thailand on Wednesday. Following a dominant 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan, the team started strong against Indonesia.

The first opportunity arose in the fourth minute with a penalty stroke, but Navneet's shot was saved. Deepika opened the scoring with a penalty corner conversion in the eighth minute, leading to a flurry of goals.

Sunelita quickly doubled the lead, followed by Lalremsiami scoring from a rebound. Rutuja then added to the tally, and the goals kept coming, with India leading 9-0 at halftime.

After the break, Indonesia managed to score from a penalty corner, but India continued to dominate, showcasing their skill against a less experienced Indonesian defense. The team aims for a gold medal to secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
