Historic Win for Indian Women’s Cricket Team

New Delhi: The Indian women's cricket team has made history by successfully defending its gold medal at the Asian Games, achieving a remarkable 147-run victory over Sri Lanka in the final held in Nisshin on Tuesday.

With a stellar all-round performance, India secured its first gold medal of the current Asian Games. Smriti Mandhana led the charge with an impressive 79 runs off just 45 balls, propelling India to a record total of 216/3, while the bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to a mere 69 runs.

Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, took to X to express his congratulations: "Kudos to the Indian women’s team for clinching the Asian Games gold! Well done to Sri Lanka for earning silver after a commendable campaign in Japan. Mandhana's innings was highlighted by seven sixes and five fours, while Shafali Verma added 48 runs off 29 balls. Richa Ghosh also made a significant contribution with an unbeaten 49 runs from 22 balls, setting a new record for the highest total in women's Asian Games cricket history.

Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, praised the team for their back-to-back gold medals and acknowledged their recent triumph at the Asia Cup.

India's bowlers completed the comprehensive victory, with Deepti Sharma shining with figures of 3-6. Shafali Verma and Sree Charani each took two wickets, while Shreyanka Patil also contributed with two wickets as Sri Lanka was bowled out for 69.

Chamari Athapaththu was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 29 runs off 21 balls, but the chase never gained traction as India consistently took wickets.

This victory allowed India to retain the gold medal they won in the previous Asian Games, where they also triumphed over Sri Lanka in the final.

India's total of 216/3 not only broke the previous Asian Games record of 202/4 set by Hong Kong against Mongolia in the 2023 Hangzhou Games but also marked the highest score in a women’s T20 final, surpassing the earlier record of 210 set by Brazil against Spain earlier this year.
