A Memorable Victory for India's U17 Team

Guwahati, Dec 2: On a chilly Sunday evening in Ahmadabad, the Under-17 football team of India demonstrated the power of belief. Facing a one-goal deficit, their chances of qualification seemed slim, and the pressure was palpable.

However, the Blue Colts rallied to secure a 2-1 victory against Iran in the AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifier, earning their spot in the upcoming tournament in Saudi Arabia.

This marks India's 10th participation in this prestigious event. The win held special significance, particularly for Assam, as it featured key players from the region.

Assistant coach Subam Rabha, forward Rahan Ahmed, and goalkeeper Manashjyoti Baruah were integral to this determined squad that refused to back down.

For Subam, this experience has been both enlightening and fulfilling. He shared, “This was my first experience with the national team. The 40 days spent with the squad will remain memorable. Each day brought new lessons, and defeating Iran for qualification is my biggest takeaway,” he expressed.

India was placed in Group D, starting with a 1-1 draw against Palestine, followed by a 3-1 victory over Chinese Taipei, but faced a setback with a 0-2 loss to Lebanon. This made the match against Iran crucial.

“We achieved it. Our never-give-up attitude was key to overcoming Iran. We were confident, gave our all, and the result followed,” Rahan stated upon returning home to Sivasagar.

The match reflected the team's journey; despite an early setback, they continued to push forward.

The equalizer boosted their morale, and the winning goal came through relentless effort. With seven points, they matched Iran's tally but advanced based on head-to-head results.

For Subam, an AFC A Licence coach, the experience on the sidelines was surreal. “Standing in the dugout while the national anthem played was exhilarating. Representing your country is an immense honor. The competition is fierce, and even minor errors can be costly. Thus, victories against Chinese Taipei and Iran are incredibly significant,” he remarked.

He praised head coach Bibiano Fernandes, who has been instrumental in developing India's youth teams. “For Bibiano, the team always takes precedence. He leads by example, is motivating, and eager to impart knowledge. His clarity of thought is evident on the field,” Subam noted.

The qualification in Ahmadabad serves as a testament to what belief, preparation, and teamwork can accomplish. For football enthusiasts in Assam, it was a night of pride as three of their own shone on a national platform.
