India's Promising Start at Commonwealth Games 2026

India has made a strong impression on the first day of the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing a bronze medal through Lovlina Borgohain and witnessing an upset victory by Putul Sonowal in lawn bowls. As the second day approaches, the nation looks forward to more medal opportunities, particularly in para powerlifting, with several athletes set to compete in finals. The excitement continues as India aims to build on its initial success.

India's Performance on Day One

India kicked off the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2026 with a commendable performance. Before the events even began, the nation had already secured a bronze medal thanks to Lovlina Borgohain, who advanced to the semifinals after receiving a bye in the quarterfinals. A significant upset occurred when Putul Sonowal defeated the reigning world champion Ryan Bester from Canada in the men's singles lawn bowls event. Additionally, the Indian Women's Pairs team in lawn bowls began their campaign with a victory against Malta in a nail-biting tie-break. As the second day of the CWG approaches, India is eager to build on this momentum and increase its medal count.

The spotlight will be on para powerlifting, where several athletes are set to compete in both men's and women's finals at the SEC Armadillo. Notable competitors include Ashok and Parmjeet Kumar in the men's lightweight final, while Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi will vie for medals in the women's lightweight final. Kasthuri Rajamani is also set to represent India in the women's heavyweight final, followed by Sudhir and Jhandu Kumar in the men's heavyweight final later in the night (IST).

In boxing, Jadumani Singh will take on local favorite Aaron Cullen in the 55KG category. Both Putul Sonowal and the women's lawn bowls pair are expected to continue their winning streak on day two of the CWG.
