Sunil, a 27-year-old right defender who contributed to India's gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, leads a squad that includes four members from that victorious team: himself, Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, and Pawan Sehrawat. The 12-player roster also boasts prominent Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) figures like Ashu Malik, Jaideep Dahiya, Devank Dalal, and Rahul Sethpal, alongside younger athletes such as Ayan Lohchab.

Preparation is Key

Sunil highlights that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the kabaddi federation initiated the team's training camp six to eight months prior to the event, allowing ample time for players to refine their skills and strategies. "The preparation has been excellent, as our federation and SAI organized our camp well in advance. We have effectively planned our team dynamics and strategies," Sunil shared with SAI Media.

The training journey began at SAI Bengaluru, moved to Bellary, and is currently taking place at SAI Gandhinagar. This thorough preparation has equipped the team with a clear understanding of their roles and strategies, avoiding last-minute adjustments.

Continuing a Winning Tradition

India's kabaddi team aims to uphold its successful legacy at the Asian Games, having secured the men's gold in Hangzhou 2022. Sunil, along with Arjun Deshwal, Aslam Inamdar, and Pawan Sehrawat, are determined to add another gold medal to India's achievements.

"Our senior players have shaped the team's identity and have brought numerous gold medals to India. We aspire to continue that legacy and follow the path laid by our predecessors," Sunil stated. The squad has focused on enhancing its overall structure, including tactical planning, fitness, and individual skill development.

"Winning requires collective effort, not just individual brilliance. Our raiding and defense units are both robust. We have top-tier players in kabaddi, whether in raiding or defense," Sunil remarked.

"We have completed our preparations, focusing on strategy, team dynamics, fitness, and individual skills. Now, it's crucial to execute these plans effectively during the competition. Every player must contribute, and our raiders, defenders, and all-rounders need to function cohesively as a team," he added.

Sunil's role is vital in coordinating India's defense and ensuring effective communication during critical match moments. His experience with many established raiders enhances his understanding of the team's dynamics.

Competition Schedule

The kabaddi events at Aichi-Nagoya will take place at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium in Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture, with the men's and women's finals set for September 26. The team's campaign kicks off on September 21.
