India's Athletics and Boxing Stars Aim for Glory at Commonwealth Games 2026
Athletics Stars Target First Medals
On Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, India's athletics stars, Parul Chaudhary and Murali Sreeshankar, will lead the charge as they strive to enhance the nation's medal tally in their respective finals.
Parul Chaudhary, who holds the national record, is set to compete in the women's 3000m steeplechase final, aiming for her first medal at the Commonwealth Games. She is also scheduled to participate in the women's 5000m event later in the competition, as reported by ESPN.
Meanwhile, Murali Sreeshankar, who secured a silver medal at Birmingham 2022, will seek to reclaim his spot on the podium in the men's long jump final. He will be joined by fellow athlete Lokesh Satyanathan, while Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the national record holder, will kick off his campaign in the men's shot put qualification alongside Samardeep Singh Gill.
Boxers Compete for Semifinal Spots
The boxing team from India is gearing up for a busy day, with six boxers just one win away from securing a medal by reaching the semifinals. The athletes include Sakshi Choudhary (women's 51kg), Arundhati Choudhary (women's 70kg), Sachin Siwach (men's 60kg), Ankush Yadav (men's 80kg), Narender Berwal (men's 90+kg), and Jaismine Lamboria (women's 57kg), all set to compete in the quarterfinals.
India has already guaranteed four boxing medals through Lovlina Borgohain, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, and Jadumani Singh, who have advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight categories.
Events in Weightlifting, Swimming, and Para-Sports
In weightlifting, Sanjana will participate in the women's 77kg final, while Manpreet Kaur is expected to be a strong contender in the women's shot put final later in the day.
The swimming events are concluding with Sajan Prakash and Aneesh S. Gowda competing in the men's 200m freestyle heats, alongside Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, and India's para swimmers.
The para athletics team will also be in action, with Devender Kumar and Sagar Thayat competing in the men's discus throw F42-44/F61-64 final, and Mohammed Basil M and Dilip Mahadu Gavit participating in the men's 100m T47 final.
So far, India has had a successful campaign in Glasgow, securing a total of 12 medals, which includes two gold, seven silver, and three bronze.
