Indian Wrestlers Shine at Ulaanbaatar Open with Four Golds
Outstanding Performance by Indian Wrestlers
On June 5, Indian wrestlers Manisha Bhanwala and Neha secured gold medals in their respective categories at the Ulaanbaatar Open, a prestigious Ranking Series event held in Mongolia. The Indian team showcased remarkable talent, achieving a total of four gold and two bronze medals across both women's and Greco-Roman wrestling competitions. With these victories, India has solidified its position in the overall medal standings, having amassed six medals thus far.
The Greco-Roman wrestlers concluded their campaign with two golds and a bronze, demonstrating exceptional skill against a strong international field. Sunil clinched the gold in the 87kg category, triumphing over Azad Salidinov with a score of 4-1 in the final match. Nitesh also emerged victorious in the 97kg category, winning 13-9 against Nurassyl Amanaly. Additionally, Sumit earned a bronze medal in the 60kg category after defeating his fellow countryman Sahil 5-0.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh praised the athletes, stating, “The achievements of Manisha and Neha, along with the three medals from our Greco-Roman wrestlers, highlight our competitive edge on the global stage. Securing gold against formidable opponents from DPR Korea and Kazakhstan showcases the effectiveness of our training. This strong start sets a positive tone for the remainder of the tournament.”
In the Women’s Wrestling category, Manisha claimed the 57kg gold medal with a 3-1 victory over North Korea’s Sim Son, while Neha added another gold in the 59kg category by defeating DPR Korea's Pyol Hong 5-3. Earlier, Neelam had secured a bronze in the 50kg category, winning decisively with a 10-0 technical superiority against Kazakhstan’s Maral Tangirbergenova. The Men’s Freestyle division and the remaining Women’s Wrestling weight categories are set to begin on June 6, providing India with additional chances to enhance its medal tally at this esteemed event.
