Indian Women's Doubles Team Advances at Indonesia Open 2025 Badminton Tournament

In an impressive display at the Indonesia Open 2025, Indian women's doubles shuttlers Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the pre-quarterfinals after winning their first-round match against Ukraine's Buhrova and Kantemyr. Despite a rocky start, the duo showcased resilience, overcoming challenges in a tightly contested second game. Meanwhile, Kiran George faced a tough loss in men's singles, marking the end of India's challenge in that category. Mixed doubles saw some success with Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath's comeback victory, although other Indian pairs were eliminated. The tournament continues to highlight the competitive spirit of Indian badminton players.
 

Indian Duo Shines in Women's Doubles

Jakarta, Indonesia - On June 5, Indian women's doubles badminton players Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made a remarkable entry into the pre-quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open 2025 tournament, securing victories in straight games.


Ranked 12th in women's doubles, the Indian pair triumphed over Ukraine's world No. 19 duo, Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr, with scores of 21-14 and 22-20, as reported by Olympics.com.


After a shaky start, trailing 4-1 in the first game, Treesa and Gayatri quickly regained their composure to clinch the first game decisively.


The second game proved to be more competitive, with the Indian players trailing 11-10 at the break. However, they managed to reclaim the lead, only to face a tense finish where they missed two match points before sealing the win in a tie-break.


In the men's singles category, Kiran George, ranked 37th, faced a tough match against former world champion Loh Kean Yew from Singapore, losing in 32 minutes with scores of 22-20 and 21-9.


Kiran's defeat marked the end of India's campaign in the men's singles after earlier exits by Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy.


In mixed doubles, Sathish Karunakaran and Aadya Variyath made a comeback from a game down to defeat Chinese Taipei's Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Gonzales Chan, winning 15-21, 21-16, 21-17, thus keeping India's hopes alive.


Unfortunately, other Indian mixed doubles pairs faced defeats, including Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde, who lost 21-14, 21-9 to Japan's Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara, and Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh, who fell 21-15, 21-9 to Denmark's Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch.


India's top mixed doubles team, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, also exited the tournament after losing 21-11, 16-21, 21-14 to Malaysia's second seeds, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei.


Earlier, PV Sindhu and the duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy advanced to the second round on Tuesday.
