Indian Players Excel in US Open Badminton Tournament

In Iowa, USA, on June 27, Indian badminton players Ayush Shetty and Tanvi Sharma have successfully reached the quarter-finals of the US Open 2025 tournament after impressive performances in their second-round matches.

Ayush Shetty, seeded fourth and currently ranked 34th globally, faced a tough challenge against fellow Indian Tharun Mannepalli, who is ranked 54th. After a hard-fought battle that went to three games, Shetty emerged victorious with scores of 21-12, 13-21, and 21-15 in the men's singles round of 16.

Next, Shetty will compete against Kuan Lin Kuo from Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals, as reported by Olympics.com.

On the women's side, Tanvi Sharma advanced to the quarter-finals in women's singles after a commanding win over Thailand's Pitchamon Opatniputh, the reigning junior world champion and ranked 58th, with scores of 21-18 and 21-16.

Tanvi, who holds the junior world No. 2 position and is ranked 66th in the senior category, will face Malaysia's Karupathevan Letshanaa in her next match. Letshanaa reached the quarter-finals by defeating India's Aakarshi Kashyap in a closely contested match, finishing with scores of 21-17, 20-22, and 21-13.

Unfortunately, qualifier Ira Sharma's journey ended with a defeat against Ukrainian seventh seed Polina Buhrova, who won 22-20, 11-21, 21-12. Buhrova had previously eliminated India's Shriyanshi Valishetty in the opening round of the BWF Super 300 tournament.

Additionally, Anmol Kharb was eliminated after losing to Denmark's sixth-seeded Line Christophersen with scores of 23-21, 21-10 in the pre-quarters.

In women's doubles, Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra's campaign concluded with a loss to the USA's Laura Lam and Allison Lee, who won 21-10, 21-14, marking the end of India's challenge in that category.

However, in men's doubles, third seeds Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi continued their run by defeating Canada's Jonathan Lai and Nyl Yakura with scores of 21-10, 21-17.

With the mixed doubles team having exited the tournament earlier, Hariharan and Ruban remain the sole Indian doubles team still competing at the US Open.
