Historic Achievements by Indian Para Athletes

Glasgow: Indian para athletes made history at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, matching the total medal count from all previous editions combined by securing seven medals, which included one gold and one silver on Saturday.

The 28-member Indian para sports team concluded their participation with a total of seven medals — comprising 3 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze. On Sunday, Indian competitors are set to participate in track cycling and para track cycling events.

This marks the most successful performance for Indian para athletes in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

Since para sports were introduced in the Commonwealth Games during the 2002 Manchester edition, India has accumulated a total of seven medals — one gold, two silver, and four bronze.

Prior to Glasgow, the 2022 Birmingham Games were the most fruitful for Indian para sports, where Bhavina Patel and Sonalben Patel earned a gold and a bronze in para table tennis, respectively.

Sudhir, who claimed gold in para powerlifting at Birmingham, was later disqualified and stripped of his medal due to a failed dope test.

In Glasgow, para track and field athletes achieved remarkable success, winning six medals — 3 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze, while Jhandu Kumar secured the remaining bronze in para powerlifting.

The para athletics team also ended a 20-year medal drought at the Commonwealth Games, with the last medal in this category being won by Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan in the men's seated Discus Throw at the 2006 Games.

India celebrated three double podium finishes in para athletics in Glasgow: Sharmila (gold) and Shilpa Shyla (bronze) in women's shot put F57; Dilip Mahadu Gavit (gold) and Mohammed Basil (silver) in men's 100m T47; and Soman Rana (gold) and Shubham Juyal (silver) in men's shot put F57.

Additionally, Indian athletes set one Games record and one Asian record during the competition.

At the official send-off for the para sports team, Devendra Jhajharia, President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), expressed confidence that India could achieve a record-breaking medal tally in para sports at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The para powerlifters trained at a pre-CWG camp in SAI Gandhinagar, while the para-athletics team prepared at SAI Bengaluru.
