Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team Triumphs Over Belgium in Thrilling Quarterfinal
Dramatic Victory Secured in Shootout
The Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team showcased remarkable composure, defeating Belgium 2-2 (4-3 SO) in a thrilling quarterfinal match at the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup 2025 held in Chennai, as reported by Hockey India.
Princedeep Singh emerged as the standout player, delivering exceptional saves during the shootout, reminiscent of his coach PR Sreejesh, a former goalkeeper for the senior national team. Awarded Player of the Match, Princedeep was instrumental throughout the game, particularly in the third quarter when he thwarted Belgium's penalty corners. "I've learned a lot from Sreejesh, and his presence boosts my confidence. The match was sensational, and the crowd support in Chennai was incredible," Princedeep remarked.
Intense Regulation Time Battle
In the earlier stages of the match, India displayed patience before taking the lead in the 45th minute. Captain Rohit broke the deadlock with a stunning dragflick, leveling the score at 1-1 after Belgium had initially scored in the 13th minute through Gaspard Cornez-Massant's field goal.
Belgium's strong defensive strategy in the subsequent quarter stifled India's offensive efforts. However, the third quarter saw India return with renewed energy, with goalkeeper Princedeep making remarkable saves, echoing the style of his coach Sreejesh.
In the 48th minute, Sharda Nand Tiwari scored from a well-executed penalty corner, putting India ahead 2-1 and igniting celebrations in the Egmore stadium. Unfortunately, Belgium equalized in the 59th minute through Nathan Rogge.
