Indian Football Icon I Arumainayagam Receives Arjuna Award (Lifetime) 2025
Recognition for a Football Legend
On August 18, 2026, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports honored Indian football legend I Arumainayagam with the Arjuna Award (Lifetime) 2025. This accolade acknowledges his significant contributions to Indian sports, both during his playing days and in his post-retirement endeavors.
A Remarkable International Journey
Arumainayagam, known for his speed as a winger, played for India during a golden era in football. He was a key player in the Indian squad that clinched the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games held in Jakarta, marking a historic achievement for the nation.
He made his international debut on August 28, 1962, against Thailand at the Asian Games, ultimately representing India 18 times and netting three goals. His international career also included participation in the 1964 AFC Asian Cup, where India finished as runners-up, and the Merdeka Cup in 1966 and 1967, with India securing third place in 1966.
A Distinguished Domestic Career
Arumainayagam's domestic career was equally impressive. He played in the Santosh Trophy for teams like Madras/Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and Railways from 1958 to 1971, contributing to Bengal's victory in 1962.
At the club level, he spent eight successful years with Mohun Bagan from 1961 to 1968, scoring 56 goals. His achievements with the club include winning the Calcutta Football League four times (1962-1965), the IFA Shield in 1961 and 1962, the Durand Cup in 1963, 1964, and 1965, and the Rovers Cup in 1966. He also played for Southern Railway in 1969 and 1970 and was awarded the Mohun Bagan Ratna in 2014.

The Arjuna Award (Lifetime) adds to the accolades of a player who was part of India's golden generation and played a pivotal role in a defining moment in Indian football history.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey expressed pride in Arumainayagam's recognition, stating, "It is a matter of great pride for Indian football that I. Arumainayagam has been recognised with the Arjuna Award (Lifetime). He was an integral part of the Indian team that achieved the historic 1962 Asian Games triumph, a moment that continues to hold a special place in our footballing history. This honour recognises not only his achievements as a player, but also his enduring contribution to Indian football.
