Mixed Outcomes for Indian Boxers at U19 Championships
Bangkok, Thailand - On August 1, the Indian boxing team experienced a day of mixed results at the U19 Asian Boxing Championships 2025, which commenced on Friday in Bangkok. Suman Kumari kicked off the event with a victory, while three other boxers faced tough challenges against formidable opponents.
The U19 Asian Boxing Championships serve as a vital platform for India's emerging talents to demonstrate their skills against some of the toughest competitors in Asia.
Following this event, the U22 continental championships will take place, with India fielding a robust team of 40 boxers—20 in each age category—comprising both seasoned champions and promising newcomers who have shown their mettle in domestic competitions.
During the morning session, Suman Kumari showcased the rising profile of Indian boxing by decisively defeating Meng-Sin Cheng from Chinese Taipei, securing a unanimous decision in her favor.
However, Aakash Badhwar in the men's 50kg category and Sarthi Saini in the men's 70kg category were not as fortunate. Badhwar lost 1:4 to Uzbekistan's Odilshoh Khalimov, while Saini was defeated by Haosheng Zhang from China.
In the final bout of the day for India, Lokesh was unable to secure a win against Norbek Abdullaev of Uzbekistan in the 80kg division.
India has sent a total of 40 promising young athletes to compete in the Asian U19 and U22 Boxing Championships. The tournament, which runs until August 12, will feature 396 boxers from 26 countries, making it a premier event for emerging talent across the continent.
Taking place at the renowned Indoor Stadium Huamark, the championships are organized by the Asian Boxing Association in collaboration with World Boxing and the Thailand Boxing Association.
The competition includes two age groups: U19 (born between 2007 and 2008) and U22 (born between 2004 and 2006), with both male and female boxers competing under Olympic-style rules.
