US Open: Indian Shuttlers Off to a Strong Start
Indian badminton players Tanvi Sharma, a silver medallist at the World Junior Championship, and Devika Sihag, the Thailand Masters champion, began their US Open journey with impressive victories on Wednesday. Tanvi triumphed over Germany's Yvonne Li with scores of 23-21, 21-16, while Devika secured a win against Peru's Ines Lucia Castillo, finishing 21-14, 21-14 in the women's singles first round.
In an exciting all-Indian matchup, Rounak Chouhan emerged victorious against former world junior silver medallist S Sankar Muthusamy, winning 23-21, 21-16. Following this, fifth seed Kidambi Srikanth showcased his skills by defeating compatriot D Saneeth in just 30 minutes, with a score of 21-14, 21-12.
Also moving forward in the tournament were Rakshitha Sree in women's singles and the mixed doubles team of Dhruv Rawat and K Maneesha. Rakshitha won against Tereza Svabikova from the Czech Republic with a score of 21-15, 21-8, while the seventh-seeded duo of Rawat and Maneesha took just 26 minutes to defeat Indonesia's Wirawan Ihsan Adam and Serena Kani, finishing 21-15, 21-16.
Indian Squad for Badminton Asia Junior Championships
In other news, Tanvi Patri, an All India Junior Ranking Medallist, along with Abhinav Garg, will spearhead a robust Indian team at the Badminton Asia Junior (U-19) Championships set to take place in Yatsushiro, Japan, from June 26 to July 5. The team championships are scheduled from June 26-30, followed by the individual championships, as per a press release.
During the previous edition in 2025, India secured two bronze medals in girls' singles. The Indian squad includes: Boys' singles: Abhinav Garg, Dev Ruparelia, Jagsher Singh Khangurra, Dhyan Santosh. Girls' singles: Tanvi Patri, Tanvi Reddy Andluri, Adarshini Shri N B, Shaina Manimuthu. Men's doubles: Pavan S/Punith S, Amarjit Singh Khwairakpam/Divyansh Agrawal. Women's doubles: Diya Bheemaiah B/Baruni Parshwal; Durga Esha Kandrapu/Keerthy Manchala. Mixed doubles: Punit S/Deepak Raj Aditi; Bjorn Jaison/Dianka Waldia.
