Indian Athletes Shine at the 2026 Asian Games Opening Ceremony

Celebrating India's Representation at the Asian Games

On September 19, the vibrant opening ceremony of the 2026 Asian Games took place at the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Leading the Indian delegation were kabaddi star Pawan Sehrawat and Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, showcasing India's strength with a contingent of 503 athletes competing in 36 different sports.

Sehrawat, who was part of the gold-medal-winning kabaddi team in the last Asian Games, had the honor of carrying the Indian flag alongside Bhaker, a celebrated athlete with two Olympic medals to her name. Bhaker, who recently earned two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, is set to compete in multiple events, including the women's 10m air pistol and the 25m pistol.

Reflecting on her selection as a flag-bearer, Bhaker expressed her heartfelt emotions in a video, sharing how it brought back memories of her journey in sports. She stated, "When I learned about this honor, I felt a wave of nostalgia, recalling my beginnings in the sport. I never imagined I would reach this point. It’s a truly heartwarming experience, and I am immensely proud and grateful for the support I’ve received."

Pawan Sehrawat, stepping in as the male flag-bearer due to technical issues faced by shot put athlete Tajinderpal Singh Toor, aims to lead India to another gold in men's kabaddi. Historically, India has dominated this sport, securing gold in eight out of nine editions since its introduction in 1990, with the exception of a bronze in 2018. In the last Asian Games held in Hangzhou, India triumphed over Iran with a score of 33-29 to clinch the gold medal.

As the Games unfold, India aspires to surpass its remarkable achievement from the 2022 edition, where the nation amassed a record 107 medals, including 28 golds, 38 silvers, and 41 bronzes.
