Indian Athletes Celebrate Success at Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025

The Indian contingent has made a remarkable impact at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, returning home with 33 medals, including 8 golds. A welcome ceremony in New Delhi celebrated their achievements, with dignitaries praising their resilience and dedication. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced increased cash prizes for medalists, highlighting the nation's commitment to fostering an inclusive sporting culture. This event not only honors the athletes' hard work but also emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to shine on a global stage.
 

Celebrating Triumph: Indian Athletes Return from Turin

On March 17, a welcome ceremony was held in New Delhi for the Indian athletes who recently returned from Turin, Italy, following their remarkable participation in the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games.


The event took place at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and was attended by Raksha Khadse, the Hon'ble Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, along with Mallika Nadda, the President of Special Olympics Bharat.


Among the honored guests was Bharti, a Special Olympics Bharat athlete who achieved an impressive feat by winning two gold medals during the competition.


The Indian team, consisting of 30 athletes and 19 support staff, made the nation proud by securing a total of 33 medals: 8 gold, 18 silver, and 7 bronze across six sports, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, floorball, snowshoeing, short track speed skating, and cross-country skiing.


In recognition of their outstanding performances, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced increased cash rewards for the medalists. Gold medal winners will receive Rs. 20 lakhs, while silver and bronze medalists will be awarded Rs. 14 lakhs and Rs. 8 lakhs, respectively.


Minister Raksha Khadse expressed immense pride in the athletes, stating, “We are incredibly proud of our athletes who demonstrated exceptional skill in Turin. Their achievements reflect their resilience and dedication. I also commend Special Olympics Bharat for their efforts in providing opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to showcase their talents on a global stage.”


In her remarks, Mallika Nadda celebrated the athletes' determination, saying, “Our athletes have once again shown that determination knows no limits. Their performances at the World Winter Games are an inspiration to everyone. They have shattered barriers and stereotypes to reach this level, and I am immensely proud of them. We will continue to ensure that they have every opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities.”
