Historic Ascent of Mount Kangto

Itanagar, Dec 6: A mountaineering team from the Indian Army's Eastern Command has triumphantly reached the summit of Mount Kangto, which stands at 7,042 meters, making it the tallest peak in Arunachal Pradesh and a prominent feature of the Kameng Himalayas.

The team successfully navigated the extremely difficult southern route, achieving the first documented summit of this challenging mountain, as reported by a Defence spokesperson.

Lt General RC Tiwari, the Army Commander of the Eastern Command, officially welcomed the team back, praising their remarkable bravery, discipline, and determination in overcoming significant challenges.

The 18-member expedition commenced on November 3 from a forward base, under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps.

Throughout their journey, the climbers faced some of the harshest conditions in the Eastern Himalayas, including thin air at high altitudes, freezing temperatures, perilous ice ridges, deep crevasses, and steep ice walls.

In spite of these extreme challenges, the team exemplified the core values of the Army, showcasing exceptional resilience, teamwork, and professionalism, ultimately accomplishing a goal that had long been sought after by the mountaineering community, according to a statement from Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, Defence PRO based in Guwahati.
