India Set to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad
India's Commonwealth Games Bid Gains Formal Approval
India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is on the verge of official endorsement, with the Commonwealth Sport's General Assembly in Glasgow scheduled to confirm the decision on Wednesday. This marks a significant step in India's ambition to establish itself as a global hub for multi-sport events.
The last time India hosted the Commonwealth Games was in 2010 in Delhi, but this upcoming event will take place in Ahmedabad, a city that has significantly enhanced its sports facilities over the past decade.
The General Assembly will formally approve the recommendation made by the Commonwealth Sport's Board, which was based on an evaluation by the Commonwealth Sport's Evaluation Committee.
This committee assessed various candidate cities on criteria such as technical execution, athlete experience, infrastructure, governance, and alignment with Commonwealth Sport values.
India's bid faced competition from Abuja, Nigeria, but the Commonwealth Sport opted to consider Nigeria for the 2034 Games, aiming to support its hosting ambitions.
During the Assembly, Commonwealth members will finalize the host city for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, following a presentation from India detailing its vision for the event in Ahmedabad.
A press release from Commonwealth Sport indicated that a unique broadcast moment would follow the confirmation of the recommendation, with an official announcement expected around 6:30 PM IST. India's delegation includes Kunal, the joint secretary for sports, P T Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and Gujarat's Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
Commonwealth Sport emphasized that this decision would be a pivotal moment for the future of the Commonwealth Sport Movement and a significant chapter in its century-long history.
India previously invested nearly Rs 70,000 crore to host the 2010 Games, far surpassing the initial budget of Rs 1,600 crore. The Commonwealth Games, which features athletes from 72 nations, primarily former British colonies, has struggled to maintain relevance and attract hosts.
Securing the hosting rights for the Games would be a crucial milestone in India's aspirations to host the Olympics in 2036, also proposed for Ahmedabad.
Dr. Donald Rukare, Interim President of Commonwealth Sport, noted that while both India and Nigeria presented inspiring proposals, Ahmedabad was ultimately chosen for 2030.
Ahmedabad has recently hosted several significant events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the Asian Aquatics Championships, and the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. Upcoming events include the Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Asia Para-Archery Cup, with the World Police and Fire Games set for 2029 in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is one of the key venues under development, alongside the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, which accommodates over 100,000 spectators. The complex will also feature an aquatics center, a football stadium, and two indoor sports arenas, along with an athletes' village capable of housing 3,000 participants.
India Promises a Grand Event
The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow have been significantly downsized to keep the budget in check, with plans to conduct the event within an eight-mile radius and a budget capped at £114 million (over Rs 1,300 crore). This reduction has led to the exclusion of major sports like wrestling, shooting, badminton, and hockey from the 10-sport lineup, a decision that India opposed due to its impact on medal prospects.
However, the IOA has assured that the 2030 Games will feature a comprehensive program that includes all the sports omitted from Glasgow's roster. Kalyan Chaubey, IOA joint secretary, stated, "We plan to include all our medal-winning sports such as shooting, archery, and wrestling, along with traditional sports like kabaddi and kho kho."
Commonwealth Sport acknowledged India's status as the world's most populous nation, highlighting its rich sporting history and strong performance in the Commonwealth Games, where it finished fourth in the medal tally at Birmingham 2022.
Commonwealth Sport noted that Ahmedabad's proposal underscores India's commitment to Commonwealth values and its capability to host a Games that reflects the scale and diversity of contemporary sports.
