Plans for Formula 1's Return to India

New Delhi, April 13: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Monday that India is on track to host Formula 1 races by 2027. He mentioned that a meeting with relevant authorities and stakeholders will take place within the next six months to discuss this initiative.

Recent discussions have surfaced regarding the government's interest in reviving Formula 1 at the Buddh International Circuit, nearly thirteen years after the last event was held there.

Earlier this year, sources from the Sports Ministry indicated that the Greater Noida circuit could soon welcome back Formula 1. Mandaviya's recent visit to the Buddh International Circuit (BIC) in Greater Noida hinted at plans to bring back the Indian Grand Prix, which was previously hosted from 2011 to 2013.

During an informal gathering with reporters, Mandaviya expressed optimism, stating, “We aim to restart Formula 1 soon. Discussions are ongoing, and we are committed to having Formula 1 in 2027. A meeting is scheduled in the coming months. Due to the ongoing conflict in Gulf regions, there is a perception that India is a safer venue. We need to ensure its feasibility.”

The 2026 Formula 1 season commenced with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 8, following pre-season testing in Bahrain from February 11 to 20.
