India's Boxing Team for Thailand Open Announced
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced a squad of 19 boxers for the upcoming Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament, scheduled to take place in Bangkok from May 24 to June 1. The selected athletes, comprising 10 men and 9 women, were chosen from the ongoing elite national camp at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala. The BFI adhered to its selection criteria, inviting silver medalists from the 2025 Elite Men's and Women's National Championships. This tournament will see participation from national teams across Asia, including those from China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Japan, Korea, and the host nation, Thailand.
Men's and Women's Boxing Squads Detailed
The men's team includes Naothoi Singh Kongkham (47–50kg), Pawan Bartwal (50–55kg), Nikhil (55–60kg), Amit Kumar (60–65kg), Hemant Yadav (65–70kg), Deepak (70–75kg), Dhruv Singh (75–80kg), Jugnoo (80–85kg), Naman Tanwar (85–90kg), and Anshul Gill (90kg+). The women's squad features Yasika Rai (45–48kg), Tamanna (48–51kg), Abha Singh (51–54kg), Priya (54–57kg), Sanju (57–60kg), Saneh (65–70kg), Anjali (70–75kg), Lalfakmawii Ralte (75–80kg), and Kiran (80kg+). Notably, there is no entry in the women's 60–65kg category for this tournament.
BFI President Ajay Singh Discusses Future Prospects
Ajay Singh, the President-Chairman of the BFI Interim Committee, expressed optimism about the future of Indian boxing. He remarked, "As the team prepares for the Thailand Open, we are entering an exciting period for Indian boxing. This marks the start of a busy international schedule, including the World Cup in Kazakhstan, the World Championship in Liverpool, and the World Cup Finals in New Delhi, along with several significant tournaments like the Asian Championship later this year. We have emphasized performance and transparency in our selection process, ensuring that every boxer has earned their spot through dedication and consistency. With the current talent and structure, I am confident we are poised to make a significant impact on the global stage in the coming months."
Intensive Training Camp for Selected Boxers
Initially, the Patiala camp included 60 male and 60 female boxers, selected based on their performances at the 2025 Nationals and their achievements at the REC National Athletic Meet in Rohtak and the Chief of Army Staff Cup in Pune. Following internal evaluations, the number of participants in each category was narrowed down to 40. This group will train together through June and July, with new Elite Women’s athletes expected to join from an upcoming competition. The Thailand Open serves as a platform for top Indian boxers to showcase their skills at a premier Asian event while preparing for the World Boxing Cup later this year.
