India Prepares for Decisive ODI Against South Africa Amid Dew Challenges
India's Strategy Ahead of the Final ODI
As India gears up for the final ODI against South Africa, assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate discussed the team's preparations to address the dew factor. This issue previously allowed the Proteas to chase down a daunting target of 359 runs in Raipur. Following a Test series defeat at home against South Africa, the team feels a 'slight desperation' to secure a win in the ODI series, which is currently tied at 1-1. Fans can expect an exciting showdown on Saturday in Visakhapatnam.
In the two ODIs played so far, India has posted scores exceeding 340-350 runs after batting first, but these totals have not guaranteed safety against South Africa's aggressive batting lineup. The Proteas narrowly missed reaching 350 in the first ODI but successfully chased down 359 in the second match. Dew during India's bowling innings significantly impacted performance, making it easier for South African batsmen to score on a well-maintained outfield while Indian bowlers struggled with a slippery ball.
Addressing the Dew Factor
During a pre-match press conference, Doeschate highlighted the dew factor's impact, stating, 'We are trying to quantify it, and it can vary between 10 and 20 percent in terms of its effect on the outcome.' He noted that they initially considered 320 runs a par score, later adjusting their expectations to 350 and even 360 runs, especially with dew expected to play a role. The team is focused on maximizing their scoring potential and strategizing on how to adapt to the conditions.
The assistant coach emphasized the importance of practical preparation, mentioning that players are practicing with wet balls to improve their bowling techniques under challenging conditions. 'We are working on how to defend big totals and what the best bowling strategies are when dew is present,' he added.
Match Timing and Its Implications
When asked if starting the match earlier than the scheduled 1:30 PM IST could mitigate the dew issue, Doeschate responded, 'The dew tends to fall as the second innings begins, meaning it will be present throughout. An earlier start might reduce its impact slightly, but there are many factors to consider, especially regarding broadcasting, making it a complex discussion.'
Pressure to Win Following Test Series Defeat
Reflecting on the pressure to win the ODI series after a 0-2 loss in the Test matches, Doeschate remarked, 'The players are different, but they understand the weight of their responsibilities. We always aim to win, and when losses accumulate, it can create a sense of urgency to perform better. There is definitely a desire to win the series tomorrow.'
