Introduction of the Cycling League of India

On Thursday, Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, introduced the logo for India's innovative sporting venture, the Cycling League of India, which is recognized as the first franchise-based road cycling league globally. He characterized this initiative as a pivotal advancement for cycling in India, as stated in a press release from the government.

Significance of the Launch

Mandaviya emphasized that this launch signifies a crucial turning point in Indian sports. "By establishing the world's first franchise-based road cycling league, we are not just organizing races; we are creating a professional environment that will cultivate talent, draw international interest, and align with our vision for a healthier and more active India," he remarked.

Inspiration for Young Cyclists

The Minister noted that this initiative builds on the recent surge in professional cycling events across the nation, aiming to motivate young Indians to engage in the sport. He mentioned events like the Pune Grand Tour and the weekly Sunday on Cycle gatherings, which are set to solidify cycling's status as a recognized sport in India.

League Structure and Team Composition

The league will consist of eight franchises based in various cities or regions, each fielding ten cyclists. Each team will include two international riders to bring global expertise and two junior cyclists to foster emerging Indian talent, ensuring the sport's long-term viability.

Competition Format

The league's competitions will unfold in three structured phases culminating in a grand finale. The races will feature various formats, including criterium races, team time trials, and mass start events, designed to provide both strategic competition and thrilling experiences for spectators.

Building on Recent Success

This initiative is a continuation of the impressive revival of professional cycling in India. Notably, the Pune Grand Tour has become the largest UCI 2.2 stage race globally, attracting 2.5 million spectators and generating significant public relations value, earning accolades from the Union Cycliste Internationale.

Fostering a Nationwide Cycling Culture

In addition to professional growth, there has been a nationwide effort to promote cycling as a popular movement. Launched in December 2024, Fit India Sundays on Cycle has evolved into a significant public initiative, engaging over 2.5 million citizens across more than 250,000 locations in 63 editions. What started with five locations and around 500 participants has now expanded to over 10,000 locations every Sunday, with more than a million citizens regularly participating, making cycling a cultural phenomenon and a community-driven solution to pollution.

Support from Leadership

The movement has received backing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, transforming it into a nationwide campaign for fitness and combating obesity. Other significant events, such as the Statue of Unity Cyclothon and various cyclothons organized throughout the country, have played a crucial role in boosting the sport's popularity and participation.

Ravneet Gill, CEO of New Horizon Alliance Private Limited, highlighted the long-term vision behind this initiative. India is experiencing a rapid growth of professional league culture across various sports, with several new leagues expected to launch soon.
