India Faces Historic Defeat Against South Africa in Test Series
India's Setback in the ICC World Test Championship
Following a disheartening series loss to South Africa on home soil, India has slipped to fifth place in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings. This marks only the second instance since 2000 that South Africa has triumphed in a Test series on Indian territory. According to the ICC, India's defeat by 408 runs is now recorded as their largest loss in terms of runs in Test cricket history. This victory has bolstered South Africa's position in the WTC 2025-27 standings, placing them second with 36 points from four Test matches, just behind Australia. Their points percentage has increased from 66.67 to 75, having won three matches and lost only one.
India's Performance and Rankings
Currently, India has fallen below Pakistan, who holds the fourth position in the rankings, with India's points percentage dropping to 48.15. Their record now stands at four losses, four wins, and one draw. After a slow start on the first day with a score of 247/6, all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy scored his maiden Test century (109), while Marco Jansen contributed significantly with a brisk 93 runs off 91 balls, including six fours and seven sixes, helping South Africa reach 489 in their first innings. Kuldeep Yadav was India's standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for 115 runs.
South Africa's Dominance
Jansen continued his impressive performance with the ball, achieving figures of 6/48, which led to India being bowled out for just 201 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal (58 runs off 97 balls) and Washington Sundar (48 runs off 92 balls) provided some resistance with their half-centuries. India started well with a 65-run partnership but collapsed to 122/7, ultimately struggling to reach the 200-run mark. South Africa opted not to enforce the follow-on and extended their lead beyond 500 runs. Tristan Stubbs scored 94 runs off 180 balls before the innings was declared at 260/5. Once again, the spinners shone, with Jadeja making an impact. India was left with a daunting target of 549 runs, and Simon Harmer, named Player of the Match, dismantled the Indian batting order with 6 wickets for just 37 runs after taking 3 for 64 in the first innings.
