India Emerges as a Boxing Superpower with Stellar World Cup Performance
India's Remarkable Achievement at the World Boxing Cup Finals
In New Delhi, Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh highlighted the nation's outstanding results at the recently concluded World Boxing Cup Finals, asserting that Indian boxing has transitioned from being an emerging force to a dominant power in the sport.
India showcased its prowess by securing nine gold medals and achieving podium finishes in all 20 categories of this prestigious event, which featured the top eight competitors from two World Boxing Cup legs.
The country concluded the tournament with a total of nine gold, six silver, and five bronze medals, leaving Singh understandably thrilled with the outcome.
"This marks a historic day for Indian boxing. I believe we have never won 20 medals, including nine golds, in any international competition before," Singh remarked, emphasizing that this achievement is merely the beginning of a journey aimed at success in the Asian Games and the Olympics.
The boxers face a busy schedule in 2026, with competitions lined up for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, while junior athletes are also gearing up for the Youth Olympics, according to a release from the Boxing Federation of India.
Singh noted that the World Boxing Cup Finals awarded double points compared to the two World Boxing Cups, which will significantly enhance the boxers' rankings and improve their chances in future major competitions.
All nine gold medalists credited the support from the BFI and their teammates as crucial to their success.
"A significant portion of this achievement belongs to the BFI and our coaching staff. Not long ago, India struggled in the world rankings, but now we stand in third place," stated two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen.
Nikhat, who returned to competition after a lengthy hiatus in 2025, secured the gold in the 51kg category.
Preeti, who won gold in the women's 54kg division, expressed that competing in front of a home crowd greatly boosted her confidence.
"This was my first major event in a long time, and being in India gave me the assurance I needed. I am thrilled to have won the gold medal," she shared.
