ICC Suspends USA Cricket Amid Governance Issues
ICC Takes Action Against USA Cricket
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the immediate suspension of USA Cricket (USAC) following a comprehensive review of its operations and discussions with key stakeholders over the last year.
This decision was made during a recent ICC board meeting, citing USA Cricket's ongoing violations of its responsibilities as an ICC member as outlined in the ICC Constitution. Despite this suspension, the ICC has confirmed that the national teams of the United States will still be allowed to compete in ICC events, including preparations for the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28).
Previously, at the 2024 ICC Annual General Meeting, USA Cricket was put 'on notice' for failing to meet ICC Membership Criteria, with a 12-month period granted to address these issues. In July, the ICC Membership voted to maintain this status, emphasizing the need for 'free and fair elections' and significant governance reforms.
The ICC highlighted several areas of concern, including the absence of a functional governance framework, insufficient progress towards achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and actions that have harmed the reputation of cricket both domestically and internationally.
Describing the suspension as 'unfortunate but necessary,' the ICC aims to safeguard the future of the sport. During this period, the management of USA national teams will be temporarily overseen by the ICC and its appointed representatives to ensure ongoing support for players and maintain progress towards Olympic participation.
The ICC Normalisation Committee, led by Jay Shah, will detail the necessary steps for lifting the suspension and restoring USA Cricket's membership rights. This will involve clear and specific changes to the governance structure, operations, and overall standing of USA Cricket within the cricketing community. The committee will also monitor USA Cricket's advancements and offer consultative assistance.
