Mayank Yadav's Return to IPL Action

Former West Indies fast bowler and commentator Ian Bishop has publicly supported Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mayank Yadav following backlash after his return in the IPL 2026 match against Rajasthan Royals on April 22 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

After being sidelined for 353 days, Mayank made his comeback for LSG in a match that ended in a 40-run defeat for the hosts, marking their fifth loss of the season. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old's return was not as successful as hoped; he ended the game without taking a wicket and allowed 56 runs at an economy rate of 14 over four overs.

Mayank had missed the first six matches of the season due to a prolonged back injury that kept him out of competitive cricket for nearly a year.

Bishop's Reaction to Criticism

The young pacer's performance drew criticism, prompting Ian Bishop to defend him. Bishop expressed his dismay over the negative remarks directed at Mayank, labeling them as 'horrifying' and emphasizing that the bowler deserves understanding and encouragement as he works to regain his form after a lengthy injury recovery.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bishop stated, "To see negative comments about Mayank Yadav today is horrifying. The kid nearly lost his career & livelihood at 21 years. Just to see him play again is a huge boost. The fact that he clocked 150kph again is a miracle. At 23 years, just pray for him that he stays fit. The control will come."

Growing Support for Mayank Yadav

Bishop's defense has resonated with fans and cricket analysts alike, who have rallied around Mayank, echoing the call for patience and support. Many highlighted the challenges he faced during his recovery and the time needed to regain his competitive edge.

Supportive messages flooded social media, with fans urging others to focus on Mayank's potential rather than his recent struggles. Comments included sentiments about his difficult journey, the need for patience, and the importance of backing young bowlers returning from injuries.

Mayank's Journey and Future Prospects

Mayank Yadav's last competitive appearance was in a T20 World Cup warm-up match for India A against Namibia, where he recorded figures of 2/17. He was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 20 lakh during the IPL 2022 Auction, and his performance in the 2024 season led to his retention for INR 11 crore in the 2025 tournament. Despite limited play due to injuries, he was retained again for the 2026 season.
