The Pakistan hockey team is currently facing a series of challenges in the FIH Pro Hockey League, having lost all their matches so far. With upcoming games against England and India, concerns about inadequate preparation and financial struggles are mounting. Promises of assistance from officials have yet to materialize, leaving the team in a precarious position as they strive to improve their performance and secure their place in the league.

Pakistan's Struggles in the FIH Pro Hockey League

The Pakistan hockey team is currently at the bottom of the FIH Pro Hockey League for the 2025-2026 season, having lost all eight of their matches. Their prospects for advancing are bleak, and the team is grappling with various challenges. Earlier this year, the players faced a difficult situation in Australia when the Pakistan Hockey Federation failed to settle hotel bills, forcing them to find alternative accommodations. This chaotic tour resulted in a clean sweep loss against Australia.

Upcoming matches against England and India in June pose additional concerns, as the team lacks a proper training camp and is anxious about inadequate preparation. Notably, Pakistan has not secured a victory against India since 2016, with their next encounters scheduled for June 23 and 26. Reports indicate that players had hoped for the appointment of former Indian coach Roelant Oltmans due to his understanding of Indian hockey, but the federation instead chose Olympian Manzoorul Hasan. Players have expressed dissatisfaction with this decision, citing concerns about Hasan's experience and knowledge of modern hockey tactics.

As the players participate in leagues in Europe and Hong Kong, these experiences are not viewed as sufficient preparation for national-level competitions. Sources have indicated that the players are eager for comprehensive training, but there are no signs of a camp or international coaching support to adequately prepare for facing a strong team like India in the Pro League.

Financial Struggles of Players

Financial Hardships

In addition to performance issues, the Pakistan Hockey Federation has reportedly failed to provide daily allowances to players, leaving them in a precarious financial situation. The absence of central contracts or match fees has compounded their struggles. One player expressed the sentiment shared among the team, stating, “We are left underpaid and under-prepared, which puts us in a difficult position to maintain our status in the Pro League.”

Promises of Support from Officials

Official Support and Promises

Following the tour in Australia, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi assured the team of comprehensive support regarding fitness and medical facilities. However, it appears that these promises have not been fulfilled. Additionally, after the World Cup qualification, Prime Minister Mohammad Shehbaz Sharif announced a cash reward of 1.5 million PKR for each player as recognition of their efforts. While this initiative was intended to honor the team's dedication, it remains unclear whether the players have received these rewards.
