Hockey India Takes Action: Odisha Association Faces Reclassification Threat

Hockey India has issued a show-cause notice to the Hockey Association of Odisha, suggesting a reclassification due to alleged non-compliance with bye-laws. This decision follows a report that halted the association's elections. Key concerns include the lack of elected officials in district units and missing documentation for electoral processes. HAO has two weeks to respond with the necessary paperwork, or it may face formal reclassification. The general secretary of Hockey Odisha has welcomed this move and urged for government intervention to ensure proper administration of hockey in the state.

Hockey India Issues Notice to Odisha Association

Bhubaneswar: Hockey India has sent a show-cause notice to the Hockey Association of Odisha (HAO), suggesting a downgrade from a permanent member to an associate member due to alleged violations of the national federation's bye-laws. This decision was made during the Executive Committee meeting on October 6, following a negative report from the Electoral Officer that halted the HAO's elections originally scheduled for October 3.

Hockey India has outlined eight significant concerns, highlighting serious issues within the operations of HAO's 30 district units. The federation pointed out that crucial roles such as president and secretary in all district associations are currently occupied by administrative officials, including District Magistrates and Sub-Collectors, rather than being elected. Furthermore, Hockey India noted that none of the district units had provided election notices, minutes, or results to confirm that their governing bodies were established through a valid electoral process.

The lack of necessary documentation has also hindered the completion of the electoral roll for the HAO elections. HAO has been granted a two-week period to present detailed documentation, including evidence of elections and the required statutory approvals. If they fail to comply, formal reclassification proceedings may be initiated by Hockey India’s Affiliation Committee and subsequently reviewed by its General Body. In response, Hockey Odisha's general secretary, Pratap Satpathy, expressed support for Hockey India’s actions and called on the Odisha Chief Minister to step in to ensure transparent governance of hockey in the state.
