India's Cricket Milestone Against Japan

New Delhi: The Indian men's cricket team is set to play against Japan in their inaugural T20 International on September 22, coinciding with the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

This match, scheduled to take place in Sano, Japan, will serve as an important opportunity for the Indian squad to refine their strategies and gain momentum ahead of the Asian Games, which will be held in Aichi-Nagoya from September 19 to October 4.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced, "The Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and BCCI are thrilled to confirm that the men's teams from both nations will compete in a T20 International match to kick off the 75th anniversary celebrations of India-Japan diplomatic ties."

The teams will vie for the Suzuki Cup at the Sano International Cricket Ground located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

According to the statement, "This match marks the beginning of 'Sport 75', an initiative born from discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at enhancing human exchanges and cooperation in sports, especially considering India's aspirations to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036."

Shreyas Iyer will captain the Indian team, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain, alongside notable players like Sanju Samson and rising star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

India enters the Asian Games as the defending champions, having secured gold in the last edition held in Hangzhou, China, where their final against Afghanistan was interrupted by rain, leading to them being awarded the title based on their superior T20I ranking.

The Indian team will kick off their Asian Games journey in the quarterfinals on September 28, having been seeded directly into this stage.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed that the India-Japan match will provide a platform for cricket to expand its reach into new regions.

"The BCCI is excited to participate in this historic event as the Indian and Japanese men's teams unite for a special T20 International in Japan. This is a pivotal moment for cricket, allowing the Indian team to explore new territories and introduce the sport to a broader audience in Japan and East Asia," Saikia stated.

"India and Japan have a robust and enduring friendship, and we are delighted that cricket will play a role in celebrating 75 years of bilateral relations. We appreciate the Japan Cricket Association's efforts in facilitating this match," he added.

Saikia emphasized the responsibility of the world's largest cricket board to promote the sport beyond its traditional strongholds.

We will collaborate closely with the JCA to enhance cricket in Japan and strengthen our relationship in the future."
