Historic Moments from the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group Stage
Group Stage Highlights
The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded with several remarkable achievements. Lionel Messi made history by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, contributing to Argentina's 3-1 victory over Jordan. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo reached a significant milestone despite Portugal's goalless draw against Colombia in their final Group K match. Additionally, Africa celebrated a historic achievement with nine out of ten teams advancing to the Round of 32, a record for the continent.
Messi's Unprecedented Streak
Argentina capped off their group stage with a flawless record, defeating Jordan 3-1 to secure the top position in Group J. Although Messi started on the bench, Argentina quickly took a 2-0 lead with goals from Giovani Lo Celso and a penalty by Lautaro Martinez. Jordan managed to score through Musa Al-Taamari, but Messi's late free-kick sealed the victory.
Messi's scoring streak now includes seven consecutive World Cup matches, a feat unmatched in men's football history. He also became the fourth player to score in all three group matches of a single World Cup since the format's inception in 1998, joining the ranks of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Villa, and Fernando Torres.
His record began with a hat-trick against Algeria, followed by a brace against Austria, and the goal against Jordan brought his total to 19 World Cup goals, solidifying his status as Argentina's all-time leading scorer in the tournament. Messi is also the tournament's top scorer with six goals as the group stage concludes. Remarkably, he has now reached the knockout stage in six consecutive World Cups, from 2006 to 2026. Argentina will face Cape Verde in the Round of 32, while Jordan exits the tournament after three losses.
Ronaldo Matches Appearance Record
In a Group K match, Portugal and Colombia ended in a 0-0 stalemate, with Colombia finishing first in the group and Portugal in second. Colombia needed only a draw to secure the top spot, while Portugal sought a win but failed to capitalize on their possession. Both teams had opportunities, including a disallowed header from Davinson Sanchez and crucial saves from goalkeepers Diogo Costa and Camilo Vargas.
Cristiano Ronaldo made his 25th World Cup appearance in this match, tying with Lothar Matthaus for the second-most appearances in World Cup history. Only Messi has more appearances, with 29. Additionally, Ronaldo has been flagged offside 11 times in the last two World Cups, more than any other player during that period.
England Dominates Group L
England concluded their group stage with a 2-0 victory over Panama, finishing at the top of Group L for the second consecutive tournament. They earned seven points, matching their best-ever group stage performance. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored, with Kane becoming England's all-time leading World Cup scorer with 11 goals, surpassing Gary Lineker's previous record of 10. Bellingham also made history as the youngest England player to score and assist in a World Cup match since 1966. England topped the group ahead of Croatia, while Ghana advanced as well. Panama exited without a win or a goal.
Congo DR's Historic Win
In another Group K match, Congo DR achieved a historic 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, marking their first-ever World Cup win and securing a place in the knockout stage. After falling behind to an early goal from Eldor Shomurodov, Congo DR rallied in the second half with a penalty from Yoane Wissa and two late goals from him, alongside a strike from Fiston Mayele. Uzbekistan, despite a promising start, was eliminated in their World Cup debut.
Croatia Advances with Narrow Victory
Croatia edged out Ghana 2-1 in a closely contested Group L match to secure their spot in the Round of 32. Petar Sucic opened the scoring with a long-range effort, but Ghana equalized through Derrick Luckassen. Nikola Vlasic scored the decisive goal from a Luka Modric corner in the 83rd minute. Despite the loss, Ghana progressed as one of the best third-placed teams, while Croatia finished second in the group behind England.
Algeria and Austria Draw in Thrilling Match
Algeria and Austria played out an exciting 3-3 draw in their final Group J match, with both teams qualifying for the Round of 32. The match featured multiple lead changes, with goals from Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer for Austria, and strikes from Belghali and Riyad Mahrez (twice) for Algeria. Mahrez seemed to have clinched the win late on, but Sasa Kalajdzic scored a stoppage-time equalizer for Austria. The result allowed Austria to finish second in the group, while Algeria advanced as one of the best third-placed teams.
Historic African Representation
With Ghana, Algeria, and Congo DR advancing, Africa made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with nine out of ten participating teams qualifying for the Round of 32. This achievement surpasses the previous record of two African teams reaching the knockout stage in a single tournament (2014). The teams that advanced include Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, Congo DR, and Cabo Verde, while Tunisia was the only team to miss out.
