On July 14, in Dubai, Hayley Matthews, the all-rounder from West Indies, has triumphed over Tazmin Brits and her teammate Afy Fletcher to secure the ICC Women's Player of the Month award for June.
This marks Matthews' fourth monthly award, having previously won in November 2021, October 2023, and April 2024. With this latest achievement, she is now tied with Australia's Ash Gardner for the most ICC Women's Player of the Month titles.
The West Indies captain received this recognition following her impressive performances, particularly in the T20 format, where she earned the Player of the Series award during a 2-1 T20I series victory against South Africa at home.
Expressing her gratitude, Matthews stated, "Receiving the Player of the Month award again is a great honor. I’m happy with my recent form, but more importantly, contributing to the team's success, especially in a challenging T20I series against South Africa, has been rewarding."
"While I appreciate this recognition, my focus is on future goals. There’s much more I aim to achieve, both individually and with the team. We are progressing well, and I am eager about our potential moving forward," Matthews added.
In the series, Matthews scored a total of 147 runs with a strike rate of 120.49 and an average of 73.50, also taking two wickets with her crucial off-spin bowling.
After a modest performance of 19 runs in the first match, she played a pivotal role in the subsequent games with scores of 63 not out and 65, helping the West Indies recover from an initial loss to clinch the series 2-1.
Despite facing challenges in the ODI series due to a shoulder injury, for which she is scheduled to undergo surgery, Matthews still made significant contributions, scoring 40 and 56 runs and taking four wickets at an average of 34.25 in a 2-1 series defeat.
