Harsh Mehta's Breakthrough in Pickleball

Prominent Indian pickleball athlete Harsh Mehta has achieved a significant milestone in his career by securing a pivotal contract with the APP Tour, a developmental circuit in the United States that organizes tournaments throughout the year for both amateur and professional players. Excelling on this tour can lead to opportunities on the PPA Tour, which represents the pinnacle of professional pickleball in the US.

Harsh, who played for Chennai Super Warriors during the inaugural Indian Pickleball League (IPBL) in New Delhi in December 2025, is recognized for his remarkable consistency. His recent success on the PPA Tour Asia, where he earned a gold medal in Malaysia and showcased strong performances in Vietnam, has paved the way for this new deal. Although he did not medal in Vietnam, his achievements included a gold at the Japan Open and a bronze at the US Open, further emphasizing his skill.

During the IPBL, he was honored as the Best Doubles Player – Male. As the captain of Chennai Super Warriors, he led the team to an unbeaten record in the round-robin stage, although their journey concluded in Qualifier 2 against the eventual champions, Mumbai Smashers. Harsh's steady ascent continued in 2024 with a gold medal at the PPA Australia event and a silver at the Indian Open, where he faced top players Andrei Daescu and Rob Nunnery (APP World No. 1). He also claimed the men’s doubles title at the PWR DUPR India Masters alongside Armaan Bhatia.

A Journey of Resilience

Harsh Mehta's rapid rise as one of India's top pickleball players is underpinned by a compelling story of resilience. Before he became a formidable competitor, he faced serious health challenges as a child. Born in Surat and raised in Mumbai, Mehta shared his struggles with chronic bronchitis and mild asthma, which he battled from the age of three. In an interview, he reflected, "My earliest memories were not of playgrounds or cheering crowds, but of endless coughing fits. Nights blurred into days of restless wheezing, hospital visits, and the heavy silence of worried parents."

His entry into sports was initially motivated by medical advice rather than passion. "Doctors advised my family that I needed to build my lungs through sports," he recalled. With strong family support, he began with table tennis, achieving impressive rankings in Mumbai and Maharashtra, and even winning a bronze medal at the National Championships.

However, balancing academics with competitive table tennis proved challenging, leading him to step back from the sport. Eventually, he rediscovered his love for athletics through pickleball while continuing his education. "While pursuing my MBA in Marketing from KJ Somaiya Institute of Management, I realized I could fully commit to pickleball as the sport was rapidly gaining popularity in India," he concluded.
