Harmanpreet Kaur's Leadership Journey

New Delhi: The cricket community is paying heartfelt tributes to Harmanpreet Kaur following her resignation as captain of the Indian women's cricket team across all formats on Tuesday.

Harmanpreet, who made history as India's only captain to win a Women's World Cup, announced her decision, expressing her readiness to return to the game purely for the love of it.

Yuvraj Singh, a former all-rounder and fellow Punjabi, shared an Instagram story featuring Harmanpreet with the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup trophy.

"You dedicated everything to Indian cricket as captain, Harman. You handled the responsibilities, pressures, and emotions with pride. Thank you for your immense contributions to the team and the nation," he wrote.

Shafali Verma, who debuted under Harmanpreet's leadership, also expressed her gratitude on Instagram.

"From my debut day, you have always supported me, both on and off the field. Your guidance during my early days and unwavering support have meant the world to me," she shared.

"Harman di, your impact on Indian women's cricket will never be forgotten. You have led us through remarkable moments and shaped the team we are today. Thank you for everything, captain."

The 37-year-old's announcement followed a review meeting by the BCCI in Guwahati, which assessed the team's recent performance. The meeting was chaired by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and included Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and head coach Amol Muzumdar.

Mandhana, who has expressed her desire to lead the 'Women in Blue', is a strong candidate to succeed Harmanpreet.

BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla praised Harmanpreet's leadership, calling her a "true inspiration" for young players.

"Harmanpreet Kaur has been a beacon for Indian women's cricket. As captain, she led India to the historic 2025 Women's World Cup victory and inspired many young girls to pursue cricket and their dreams," Shukla stated on 'X'.

"As she steps down, I wish her all the best for her future endeavors."

Teams from the Indian Premier League, including Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and UP Warriorz, also paid their respects on 'X'.

"A legacy built on courage and class! Thank you, Skipper!" tweeted Punjab Kings.

"Led with heart and inspired a generation. Thank you for the legacy, Kaptaan Kaur," Mumbai Indians wrote, acknowledging her leadership in securing two Women's Premier League titles in 2023 and 2025.

"A tenure that inspired young girls to believe in their dreams," UP Warriorz remarked.

Harmanpreet led India to its first Women's ODI World Cup title in November 2025 and secured gold at the Asian Games last month. She will continue to represent India on the field.
