Hardik Pandya's Potential Move to KKR: Aakash Chopra Weighs In
Aakash Chopra Discusses Hardik Pandya's Future
Aakash Chopra has shared his thoughts regarding the speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya's possible trade to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2027. There are whispers that Pandya might part ways with Mumbai Indians (MI) following a disappointing return and could join another team. On his YouTube channel, Chopra elaborated on why KKR might be interested in acquiring the talented all-rounder. He suggested that Pandya could effectively fill the void left by Andre Russell, who has retired from IPL.
Chopra stated, "Why would Kolkata want Hardik? They have solid reasons. Since Andre Russell stepped away from international cricket, KKR has struggled to find a suitable replacement. Although they tried Rovman Powell, he lacks bowling capabilities and is an overseas player. If they can secure an Indian player, why not? Hardik Pandya could serve as their captain and a middle-order batsman. He could be a direct replacement for Russell, if not an improvement. Being an Indian player, he brings a clutch factor and would likely take on a more significant role than Russell, especially if he captains the side, which would be a clear upgrade from their perspective," he added.
Hardik Pandya's Challenging Time with MI
Hardik Pandya made a notable return to Mumbai Indians before the IPL 2024 mini-auction, with the franchise making the bold decision to remove Rohit Sharma as captain, despite his status as India's all-format captain at that time. Under Pandya's leadership, MI had a disappointing season, finishing at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table, marking their first-ever last-place finish.
In 2025, MI reached the second round but were eliminated by Punjab Kings in the second qualifier. The following year, they avoided finishing last, securing four wins and ending up in ninth place with a total of 14 matches. Pandya initially joined MI as a rookie before IPL 2015 and became a capped player by IPL 2016. However, he was not retained before the IPL 2022 mega-auction and subsequently joined Gujarat Titans (GT), where he was appointed captain.
Under Pandya's captaincy, GT had a remarkable debut in IPL 2022, clinching the coveted trophy. In 2023, they reached the finals but lost to Chennai Super Kings. After two successful seasons with GT, Pandya returned to MI but is currently sidelined due to an injury.
