Hardik Pandya Shines in Comeback Match, Leading Baroda to Victory in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
Hardik Pandya's Impressive Return
In Hyderabad, Hardik Pandya made a remarkable return to competitive cricket, scoring an impressive 77 not out off just 42 balls for Baroda. This performance helped his team successfully chase down a target of 223 runs against Punjab, marking their second consecutive win in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
This match was particularly significant for Hardik, as it was his first appearance in nearly three months following an injury sustained during the Asia Cup Super Fours against Sri Lanka. His absence extended through the ODI and T20I series against Australia, and he was also unavailable for the ongoing 50-over series against South Africa.
After receiving clearance from the BCCI's Return to Play protocol, Hardik joined Baroda, where his brother Krunal Pandya serves as captain, for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
In the match, Punjab set a challenging score of 222/8, bolstered by half-centuries from their captain Abhishek Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh. Naman Dhir contributed a solid 39 runs, while Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera, and Sanvir Singh each scored 16.
Raj Limbani stood out as Baroda's best bowler, while Hardik, despite conceding 52 runs in his four overs, managed to take the wicket of Anmolpreet.
Baroda's chase began well with a 66-run opening partnership between Vishnu Solanki and Shashwat Rawat. However, after losing two quick wickets, Shivalik Sharma and Hardik came together to form a crucial 109-run partnership for the third wicket. After Shivalik retired out, Hardik continued to dominate, hitting seven fours and four sixes to finish with an unbeaten 77, leading Baroda to victory with five balls remaining.
For his outstanding performance, Hardik was named Player of the Match, strengthening his case for a return to the national team.
The selection committee is expected to announce India's T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa later this week.
