Gyaneshwari's Impressive Performance in Glasgow

Glasgow, Scotland - Indian weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav celebrated a remarkable achievement during her Commonwealth Games debut, securing a silver medal in the women's 53kg category on Monday. Her performance was highlighted by a fierce competition against Nigeria's Onome Omolola Didih, who ultimately took home the gold.

Expressing her joy, Gyaneshwari emphasized that her main objective was to perform to the best of her abilities, drawing motivation from Mirabai Chanu's recent gold medal win.

Chanu had previously clinched the women's 48kg title at the Commonwealth Games 2026, marking her third consecutive gold after victories in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. This win also marked India's first gold medal at the Glasgow Games.

Gyaneshwari stated, "My aim was to give my all. I take great pride in my performance, which earned me a silver medal. Mirabai's gold was a huge inspiration for me, and I received tremendous support from my coaches," during her interaction with reporters in Glasgow.

With Gyaneshwari's silver, India's medal tally rose to five, including one gold, three silvers, and one bronze, showcasing the country's strong performance at the Games.

The 23-year-old from Chhattisgarh demonstrated exceptional focus and determination throughout the competition, pushing her limits and setting multiple Games records in a closely contested battle for the top position, as reported by ESPN.

Kicking off her campaign in the snatch, Gyaneshwari impressively lifted 82kg, followed by a successful 85kg on her second attempt. She then achieved a remarkable 88kg lift, breaking the Commonwealth Games record in her category and putting pressure on Didih.

In response, the Nigerian lifter executed a record-breaking 93kg snatch, taking the lead into the clean and jerk segment. The competition intensified as both athletes displayed outstanding strength and technique.

Gyaneshwari began the clean and jerk with a strong 103kg lift, bringing her total to 191kg and setting another Games record. She followed this with a 107kg lift, further improving her mark and closing the gap to Didih.

With the gold medal within reach, Gyaneshwari attempted a final lift of 111kg, successfully completing it and finishing with a total of 199kg. This lift not only earned her another Games and Commonwealth record but also showcased her incredible talent. However, Didih countered with a stunning 113kg lift, securing the gold medal for Nigeria with a total of 206kg.

Although Gyaneshwari did not clinch the top spot, her silver medal represents a significant achievement in her career. Previously competing in the 49kg category, she moved up to 53kg, acknowledging the challenge of facing India's Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu in the lower weight class.
