Gurnoor Brar's Four-Wicket Haul Leads India to Victory

Wellington [New Zealand], November 7: Gurnoor Brar showcased an outstanding performance with a four-wicket haul, guiding Team India to a thrilling four-run victory in the rain-affected second ODI against New Zealand on Saturday. Opting to bowl first, India dismissed the Kiwis for a mere 134 runs in 41 overs. In their pursuit of 135 runs, India faced early setbacks, finding themselves at 47/4, with key players Shubman Gill (0), Rohit Sharma (23), and Virat Kohli (7) unable to contribute significantly. However, Shreyas Iyer (30 off 46 balls, including four boundaries and a six) and KL Rahul (26* off 38 balls, with two fours and two sixes) steadied the innings. Despite a challenging situation, rain interrupted play, and India was ahead by four runs according to the DLS method, securing a crucial win and taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Analysis of the Run Chase

During the chase for 135 runs, Rohit Sharma began with a boundary, marking his first runs of the tour against Kyle Jamieson. However, Jacob Duffy quickly claimed the crucial wicket of skipper Shubman Gill, leaving India at 4/1 in just over a minute of play. Virat Kohli managed to hit a beautiful cover drive off Duffy, but he soon fell to a flashy drive, caught by Will Young, reducing India to 17/2. Rohit Sharma kept the momentum going with two sixes against Jamieson, but he was dismissed for 23 runs, leaving India at 39/3. Axar Patel's struggles continued as he fell for seven runs, pushing India to 47/4.

Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul then took charge of the innings. KL hit a four and a six off Nathan Smith, while Iyer struck a couple of boundaries off Fisher. However, Jamieson broke their partnership, dismissing Iyer for 30 runs. India reached 86/5 after 20 overs. A top-edge from KL Rahul brought up the 100-run mark, but the partnership was short-lived as Naman Dhir was caught for 12 runs. India was soon at 111/7 before rain interrupted the match.

New Zealand's Innings Breakdown

Earlier, the Indian bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, restricting New Zealand to just 134 runs in 40.6 overs at the Henry Stadium in Wellington. Following a rain delay, skipper Shubman Gill opted to bowl first, a decision that proved fruitful as the Indian bowlers capitalized on the conditions to dismantle the New Zealand batting lineup.

Utilizing the overcast conditions effectively, India's bowlers struck at regular intervals, leaving New Zealand in a precarious position from the start. Daryl Mitchell provided some resistance with a half-century, but the lack of support from his teammates meant the hosts could not set a competitive total. Gurnoor Brar led the bowling attack with an impressive four-wicket haul, while Auqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Axar Patel each contributed with two wickets. Despite Arshdeep Singh not taking any wickets, he maintained tight lines, preventing easy runs for the New Zealand batters.

New Zealand's innings began poorly as Auqib Nabi took two early wickets, dismissing Tim Seifert for a duck and Will Young for just six runs. Anshul Kamboj then removed Henry Nicholls, leaving the hosts struggling at 23/3. Mitchell attempted to stabilize the innings with a determined 55 runs, but Gurnoor Brar's exceptional bowling dismantled the middle order, leading to New Zealand's collapse at 134 runs.
