Gill's Half-Century Fuels GT's Victory

Shubman Gill's impressive half-century led the Gujarat Titans (GT) to a five-wicket win against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday in Ahmedabad. Gill scored 86 runs off 50 deliveries at the Narendra Modi Stadium, showcasing his exceptional form in Ahmedabad. His innings included eight boundaries and four sixes, helping his team chase down a target of 181 runs in just 19.4 overs.

This victory marks GT's third consecutive win in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), following earlier triumphs over the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). With this win, GT now has 6 points from 5 matches, climbing to fourth place in the points table. Meanwhile, KKR remains winless in IPL 2026, sitting at the bottom with just one point.

Strong Start During Powerplay

In pursuit of 181 runs, Sai Sudharsan and Gill opened the batting for GT. The team started solidly, scoring 9 runs in Vaibhav Arora's first over. The openers maintained the momentum, adding 11 runs off Kartik Tyagi's next over, and then unleashed their aggression by scoring 20 runs off Anukul Roy in the third over. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine managed to rein in the scoring in the next over, allowing only 5 runs. GT reached 50 runs in just 4.2 overs. Narine broke the opening partnership by dismissing Sudharsan for 22 runs, bringing Jos Butler to the crease. Butler quickly targeted Narine, hitting him for two fours and a six, as GT concluded the powerplay at 71-1.

Gill Dominates the Middle Overs

Gill continued to apply pressure on KKR's bowlers, scoring 12 runs off Roy in the 7th over. In the 10th over, Chakaravarthy dismissed Butler for 25 runs, marking the seventh time he has gotten Butler out in 11 T20 matches. Gill reached his fifty in just 27 balls and kept the innings alive by hitting a six and a four off Chakaravarthy in the 12th over. Narine bowled tightly, conceding only 4 runs to finish with figures of 1/28 in four overs. Chakaravarthy struck again in the 15th over, taking out Sundar for 13 runs, which brought Glenn Phillips to the crease. Chakaravarthy also achieved a milestone of 100 IPL wickets for KKR, becoming the third player in the franchise's history to do so.

Nail-Biting Finish Secures GT's Win

In the 17th over, after hitting a boundary, Arora dismissed GT's captain Gill for 86 runs off 50 balls. Glenn Phillips attempted to finish the match with a six in the final over but was caught at deep mid-wicket after scoring 19 runs. Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan then guided GT to victory, sealing the match in the final over.

Cameron Green's Maiden Fifty Lifts KKR to 180

Earlier in the match, Cameron Green's first half-century of IPL 2026 helped KKR set a target of 180 runs against GT. Green scored 79 runs off 55 balls, marking his second-highest IPL score, following his 100* (47) for MI against SRH at Wankhede in 2023.

KKR's Top Order Struggles

Tim Seifert and Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings for KKR. Mohammed Siraj struck early, dismissing KKR captain Rahane for a golden duck, which brought Angkrish Raghuvanshi to the crease. Raghuvanshi started positively with two boundaries but was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada for just 8 runs. Seifert, making his IPL 2026 debut, scored 19 runs before Rabada sent him back, leaving KKR at 37/3 during the powerplay.

Powell and Green Lead the Recovery

Rovman Powell began to find his rhythm in the 7th over, hitting a massive six off Prasidh Krishna. He followed up with another six and a four off Ashok Sharma, helping KKR reach 59-3 after 8 overs. Green and Powell kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and boundaries, bringing KKR to 80 runs after 10 overs. Ashok Sharma dismissed Powell for 27 runs, bringing Anukul Roy to the crease. Green attacked Rashid Khan in the 12th over, hitting him for a six and a four, and continued his assault in the next over, smashing Sharma for two sixes to reach his maiden half-century this season.

Titans Regain Control in the Death Overs

Purple cap holder Krishna took Roy's wicket for 9 runs in the 15th over, and Rinku Singh joined Green for the final five overs. Rinku's struggles continued as he was dismissed for just 1 run by Rabada on the first ball of the 16th over. Ramandeep Singh joined Green and started well, hitting a six off his second ball and two fours off Sharma before getting out for 17 runs. In the 18th over, Siraj took his second wicket, dismissing Sunil Narine for a duck, bringing Kartik Tyagi to the crease. Tyagi also made a quick impact, hitting a six off Siraj on the last ball of his spell. Gujarat Titans tightened their grip, restricting KKR to 180 runs after conceding only 15 runs in the last three overs. Cameron Green was KKR's top scorer with 79 runs, while Kagiso Rabada claimed three wickets, and Sharma and Siraj took two each, with Krishna and Rashid Khan contributing one wicket each.
