Gujarat Titans' Shubman Gill Reflects on IPL 2026 Opener Against Punjab Kings
Match Overview
In their IPL 2026 opener, Gujarat Titans (GT) faced a challenging defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS), despite a commendable bowling performance. GT's captain, Shubman Gill, noted that a target of 175-180 runs would have been more suitable for the pitch at Mullanpur. The match saw PBKS, last year's runners-up, secure a hard-fought victory. GT batted first, scoring 162 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs, with Gill contributing 39 runs and Jos Buttler adding 38. Although they struggled with the bat, GT showcased resilience in the field, reducing PBKS to 118 for 6 after they had been comfortably placed at 110 for 2, thanks to Prasidh Krishna's impressive three-wicket haul. However, PBKS managed to recover, with Prabhsimran Singh scoring 37 off 24 balls and Connolly finishing with an unbeaten 72 off 44 deliveries, leading them to victory.
Gill Discusses Batting Conditions
During the post-match presentation, Gill expressed that the pitch did not favor high scores, stating, "It never looked like a 210-220 wicket. I believe a target of around 175 or 180 would have been ideal. As the ball aged, it became challenging to hit it straight. The rain in the second innings made the ball wet, which slightly improved batting conditions, but overall, I think we performed decently."
Praise for Prasidh Krishna
Gill also commended Prasidh Krishna for his timely introduction into the bowling attack during the 13th over, which proved crucial in maintaining GT's competitiveness. He remarked, "We thought that with the pitch slowing down, a quick bowler might help us take some wickets. Prasidh had been bowling well in the nets, which influenced our decision to bring him in at that moment."
Debutant Ashok Sharma's Performance
On the performance of Ashok Sharma, who made his IPL debut, Gill acknowledged that despite facing some challenges from PBKS batsmen, he managed to secure 1 wicket for 31 runs in three overs. Gill described Sharma as a valuable addition to the team, highlighting his potential for growth. "He bowled well at the start, and with more experience, he will become an asset for us. He is dedicated to improving his skills and is also a strong fielder. I was impressed by his performance during our training camp a few months ago, and I hope he gets more opportunities to showcase his abilities with the new ball," Gill added.
